Supplementation with 1200 milligram lecithin: feel stronger and make your blood vessels 10 years younger! That’s the Takeaway!

Supplementation with 1200 milligrams of lecithin per day makes the blood vessels about 10 years younger, and also makes you feel stronger and more vital. Japanese researchers, affiliated with Tokyo Medical and Dental University, come to this conclusion in a study in which 89 healthy women aged 40-60 years participated.

Lipid replacement therapy
The lecithin used by the Japanese consisted of 24 percent phosphatidylcholine, 20 percent phosphatidylethanolamine and 12 percent phosphatidylinositol. Cells use these substances to build up their membranes.

The American molecular scientist Gary Nicholson thinks that administration of this type of substance can be useful in the context of what calls ‘lipid replacement therapy’. [Biochim Biophys Acta. 2014 Jun;1838(6):1657-79.] Nicholson suspects that lipid replacement therapy is an anti-aging strategy, but perhaps may also be effective against chronic fatigue illnesses.

Study
The subjects of the Japanese were healthy, but complained of fatigue. The researchers divided the women into 3 groups. For 8 weeks, these groups took a placebo or 600 or 1200 milligrams of lecithin from soy, respectively, every day.

The researchers used a Kikkoman product. Kikkoman financed one of the researchers.

Results
Lecithin was no more effective against fatigue than a placebo.

However, the women who took 1200 mg lecithin reported a significant increase in their experience of vigor. That means that they felt stronger and more resilient. If the women in the 1200 mg group were to give their feeling of strength a score from 0-10, this figure increased by the supplementation from a 6 to an 8.

The supplementation with 1200 milligrams of lecithin per day improved the women’s cardiovascular health and reduced their diastolic blood pressure [the blood pressure between two heartbeats].

In the high dose lecithin group, the cardio-ankle vascular index [CAVI] also decreased. That is a measure of the flexibility and health of the blood vessels.

In healthy Japanese, this index decreases by about 0.04 points after the 20th year of life each year, according to the figure above. [Borrowed from: Eur Heart J Supp 2017;19:B4-10.] The decrease of 0.4 by a daily dose of 1200 milligrams lecithin thus amounts to ‘rejuvenation’ of the blood vessels of 10 years.

Conclusion
“In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the effect of soy lecithin on menopausal symptoms including fatigue and other various health parameters in Japanese middle-aged women was investigated”, the researchers summarize. “The results showed that high-dose (1200 mg/day) soy lecithin not only increases vigor, but also lowers the diastolic blood pressure and cardio-ankle vascular index in Japanese middle-aged women who complained of fatigue.”
