4 former athletes to represent Nigeria at World Masters Athletics Championships

Athletics The Nigeria Athletics Masters (NAM) says that four of its athletes will represent the country at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Malaga, Spain. The organisation’s Secretary, Uruemu Adu said on Thursday in Lagos that the event would hold from Sept . 4 to Sept. 16.

Adu said the masters athletes are Gloria Obajimi, Safiya Kongoila-Yahaya, Susan Abidakun and Kudirat Akhigbe who is the president of NAM.

He added that Obajimi, a former Nigeria international would take part in the W60 category, 200m and 800m event, Akhigbe a former athlete who has done the country proud in the 400m event will feature in the W35 and 400m.

While Kongoila-Yahaya, a medical doctor and winner of 4 gold medals at the African Masters Athletics Championships will compete in the W40 category, 100m, 200m and 400m events. Also, Abidakun who was the sole representative of the country in 2014 in Budapest, Hungary, will compete in the W40 category, 100m and 200m events.

The NAM scribe said that the body was hopeful that the representatives would do the country proud at the world stage. The World Masters Athletics, formerly called the World Association of Veteran Athletes is for athletes over the age of 35 years. The world championships is a biennial events organised for veteran athletes. (NAN)
